Safety and Quality Management
Safety is fundamental to everything that ANS stands for and does.
To ensure that the safety of the operation is maintained at all our sites, ANS have implemented a systemised, tailored and proportionate approach to safety management. To achieve this, we have employed a Unified Management Manual (UMM) which integrates safety management with two other critical fields, Quality and Security. These three elements are fundamental in helping to provide operational safety.
The UMM comprises of three manuals:
- Safety Management Manual
- Quality Management Manual
- Security Management Manual
Historically safety and Safety Management Systems (SMS) were developed in isolation but with forward thinking and learning lessons from across a whole range of safety critical industries, ANS have adopted the recognised best practice of an integration of multiple systems and their associated manuals.
These systems were not separate entities that were developed and implemented in isolation, rather they have been developed together and in doing so, have become integral. This structure not only helps to ensure effective management but it also enables similar processes to be executed without duplication affording efficiency and clarity.
Although these manuals detail the “what” to do and to some degree the “how” to deliver a safe operation, it is essential that evidence is gained in order to provide the assurance that these processes and procedures are being applied properly and consistently and that they are still relevant within the practical, operational environment.
To achieve this ANS implement a program of activities with the goal of providing the assurance to ANS senior management that our manuals are being adhered with and also to our regulator, the UK CAA, that the operation is compliant and being conducted in accordance with national and international regulations.
This evidence is gained through a number of ways, including:
- The continuous monitoring, of operational and engineering staff through the use of competency schemes.
- Internal and external audits to assess compliance with policy, process and procedures
- The use of safety surveys to identify areas for improvement
Aviation is an organic environment and one in which changes can occur on a tactical or more strategic planned basis. The ANS operation needs to be flexible and capable of adapting to the requirements of these changes whilst still maintaining the highest levels of safety and minimising any effect on service delivery. To support this requirement a number of processes are employed within our manuals which we apply to allow us to manage change in a controlled manner, identify any hazards and ensure any associated risks are mitigated to an acceptable level before changes are allowed to be implemented. The type of process employed depends on a number of factors including timeframes, type and size of change.
A core principle of ANS is to ensure that the level of service we provide consistently meets our customer requirements, adapting where necessary to changes and new demands, in a structured, coordinated and controlled manner. Our Quality Management System and the manual that supports it ensures that our business policy, procedures and processes are focussed and that resources are sufficient to allow us to achieve this principle.
Fundamental to achieving this is developing the customer-supplier relationship and working closely together for mutual benefit. ANS works closely with all levels of our customers on a regular basis, providing support where necessary and taking the time to ensure that we understand their requirements and restrictions. This close working relationship helps to define the processes we use which result in the production of a quality service.
